The Education Section Adopt-A-Doc program seeks to increase the
number of doctorally prepared faculty teaching in PT and
PTA education programs
by providing financial support to current or former PT or PTA faculty
members who are in the dissertation phase of their doctoral programs.
Award: One
award is to be given in annually.
It will include a $2,500 award
to offset tuition or doctoral
research costs and reimbursement
of Section membership of the
annual dues for that year.
The award presentation will
be made at the annual Combined
Section Meeting. Award recipients
must plan to work in a PT or
PTA education program following
graduation.
Eligibility
Criteria: (1) Member of the Education Section,
(2) Current or former faculty member within a PT or PTA education
program, (3)
Doctoral candidate with an approved dissertation proposal.

The Award for Leadership in Education is the highest honor given
by the Education Section.
Criteria
for receipt of the award include:
1.
The recipient will be a Section member who has exhibited outstanding
leadership throughout his or her career as shown by contributions
to physical therapy education in at least 3 of the 4
following areas: scholarship,
teaching, administration, or service.
2. The activities of the recipient will have reflected
substantial credit on physical therapy or physical therapy
education.
3. The actions of the recipient will have reflected substantial
credit on physical therapy. Physical therapy education,
and the APTA.
4. The recipient will be a nationally prominent educator
who will be widely recognized as a leader in physical
therapy education.
Individuals who are current members of the Education
Section Awards Committee, the Education Section Board
of Directors,
the APTA Board
of Directors,
or APTA Staff are not eligible for this award and may
not participate in the nomination process.

at least three of which are from Education
Section members.

areas (teaching,
scholarship, administration,
or service) specified in the criteria listed
above.
Any
additional materials that accompany the nomination will not be
forwarded to the Awards
Committee.

Distinguished Educator in Physical Therapy Award is to be given
to recognize excellence in teaching.
Criteria
for the receipt
of
the award
include.
1. Each recipient will be a Section member who
is currently engaged in physical therapy education.
2. Each recipient will have distinguished himself
or herself through excellence in academic or
clinical education
in
physical therapy
at the national, regional, or local level.
3. Each recipient will have distinguished himself
or herself in a subject matter area as evidenced
by publications
or
other appropriate
demonstrations.
4. Each recipient will have extended education
by developing innovative teaching methodologies
or materials.
When more than one individual has been involved
in a cooperative activity or project that demonstrates
excellence
in teaching,
a joint nomination
of all individuals who meet the criteria may
be made.
Individuals who are current members of the Education
Section Board of Directors, the APTA Board of
Directors, or APTA
Staff are not
eligible
for the award and may not participate in the

Linda Crane Memorial Lecture Award
History
Dr. Linda Crane was a dedicated member of the profession
of physical therapy since 1970, and was someone
who helped to create a significant
part of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section's
history. She was one of the first three APTA board
certified clinical
specialists
in cardiopulmonary
physical therapy (awarded in 1985), and was awarded
the Lucy Blair Service Award for distinguished service
to
the profession
in 1992.
In the early
years of the Cardiopulmonary Section she served
as Program Chair, Chairman of the Section (1982-86),
and Delegate
to the House
of Delegates.
Linda's clinical practice specialty was in
the area of pediatric cardiopulmonary physical
therapy,
and her dissertation
for her
doctoral degree in Exercise
Physiology was entitled "The relationship
of degree of kyphosis, bone density and activity
history to pulmonary function in postmenopausal
women with osteopenia."
Dr. Crane was a dedicated educator as well,
and served on the faculties of University
of Connecticut
, University
of Alabama
at Birmingham,
University of New England, and the University
of Miami. Her efforts in the area
of education are best known and recognized
for the document "Entry
Level Competencies in Cardiopulmonary Physical
Therapy."
Dr. Linda Crane died on March 24, 1999 after
a lengthy battle with metastatic breast
cancer.
Purpose
To acknowledge an individual who has made
outstanding and enduring contributions
to the practice of
physical therapy
as exemplified
in the professional
career of Linda Crane. This award is
made by the Cardiopulmonary Section, and supported
by
the Education
Section.
Eligibility
Nominees for the award must:
1. be a member of the APTA;
2. be a member of the Cardiovascular
and Pulmonary, Education, or
Pediatrics Section;
3. have demonstrated excellence/expertise
in either clinical practice,
academic practice, or in the
area of research;
4. have demonstrated contributions
to the Association through State,
Section, or
National involvement;
and
5. NOT be a member of the Awards
Committee. Members of the Awards
Committee are
responsible for reviewing
nominations,
recommending
recipients, or
awarding an award are not eligible
for nomination or consideration
for this
award.
Procedure for Nomination
1. Nominations may be submitted
by physical therapists or physical
therapist
assistants
but the nominee
must be a member of one
of the three sections:
Cardiovascular and Pulmonary,
Education, or Pediatrics Sections.
2. Nominations must be submitted
on appropriate forms (that
will be made
available through
the Cardiovascular
and Pulmonary,
Education,
and Pediatrics
Sections' Journals). Once the
nomination form is received
by the committee,
the committee will
send
the nominee
a letter notifying
the person they
have been nominated. The nominee
will then need to send to the
committee:
§ a recent curriculum vitae,
§ the names and addresses of at least 2 colleagues that the committee might
contact for a reference,
and
§ possible topics they would consider presenting if selected for this award.

Procedure
for Review
1.
Awards Committee will review the nominations and recommend
a recipient
to the Executive
Board of the Cardiovascular
and Pulmonary
Section
for final approval
by
the CSM meeting,
one year prior
to
the CSM the individual
will be giving
the honorary lecture.
2. Decision of
the Executive Board
pertaining
to selection
of the
awardee will be
final and reasons
for decision
will not be
disclosed.
3. The committee
to review the nominations
and recommend
a recipient
shall consist
of the Vice
President (who
will act as Chair
of
the Committee),
the Chair of the
Nominating
Committee,
and
the previous
recipient. The
committee will
add one or two
more members
in
the future
who would
be representatives
from
Pediatrics
and Education
Sections
when
nominees exist
from these Sections.
Notification
of Award
The
recipient of the award
will
be notified
by the
President of
the Section
following final
approval of
the Executive Board
of
the Cardiovascular
and Pulmonary
Section
at the CSM
meeting, and the
recipient
will
be announced
following the
presentation
of
the Lecture
that same meeting.
The responsibilities
of the individual
receiving the
award will
be written
in a
letter and
mailed to the
individual
following the
CSM
that the individual
is announced
as
the next Lecturer.
The
responsibilities
include
providing a
one hour lecture
and writing
the speech
as an
article for
the Journal.
The lecture
topic
will
be the decision
of
the individual
receiving the
Award, keeping
in
mind any theme
for the upcoming
CSM and
the "Spirit
of the Award."
Nature of Award
1.
A plaque will be presented to the person receiving the award.
2. The recipient will receive a monetary award of $500 upon presentation
of lecture
and will receive a certificate, which will be presented following
the lecture.
